Let me give the other side its strongest voice first, because it deserves one.
Aubrey de Grey, the biogerontologist who has spent his career on the problem of aging, has said for two decades that the first person to live to a thousand years is probably already alive. He coined a term for the tipping point: longevity escape velocity — the moment when medicine extends your remaining life expectancy faster than you spend it, so that each year of research buys you more than a year of life. He now puts a 50 percent chance on reaching it by 2036. Ray Kurzweil, who has predicted it will arrive around 2030, wrote a book whose title is the whole program in six words: Live Long Enough to Live Forever.
And here is the moral engine underneath the engineering: the overwhelming majority of human deaths trace back to aging. If you could stop aging, you would prevent more death and suffering than the cure of every other disease combined. Framed that way, working on anything else looks like a failure of seriousness. The engineers of immortality do not see themselves as dreamers. They see themselves as the only people responding proportionately to an emergency the rest of us have normalized.
I want to take that argument seriously — more seriously, I think, than it takes itself.
Where they are right
Start with the concession, because it is large.
Most of what the longevity movement actually does is medicine, and honorable medicine. Alzheimer’s, heart disease, the slow failures of the body’s repair systems — these are afflictions, and fighting an affliction is one of the oldest and best human activities. Nothing in my book, and nothing in this essay, argues for surrendering to a single disease. When this research eases the arthritis of an eighty-year-old or delays a dementia by a decade, it is what Chapter Four of The Answer Before Us calls participation in life — the healer’s work, at its most magnificent.
If the movement described itself as the fight against the diseases of old age, there would be nothing to write. It describes itself as something else. It describes itself as the fight against death.
Those are not the same project, and the difference is the whole argument.
The question of aim
Here is a test I proposed in the book, and it matters more here than anywhere: ask of any intervention not only what does it cure? but what does it aim at?
The reformer who fought cholera could point to two worlds — the world with cholera and the world without — and the second was recognizably the human world, improved. Every triumph of medicine has this shape: a particular affliction removed, the human condition left standing, better inhabited than before.
The engineer of immortality can point to no such second world. A world without death is not our world with one bad feature deleted. It is a different world altogether — inhabited by beings whose relation to time, love, risk, urgency, and one another we cannot inspect in advance, because no such beings have ever existed. Monday’s essay ran the thought experiment; I won’t repeat it here. The point is narrower: cholera’s absence was imaginable and it was lovely. Death’s absence is not imaginable — only nameable.
To proceed anyway is not medicine. It is a wager of everything on a guess.
The escape velocity problem
The movement’s own favorite metaphor gives the game away, if you listen to it.
Escape velocity is the speed at which you leave a planet — the speed at which you get free of the thing that holds you. It is an image of departure. And that is the honest name for the project: not healing the human condition, but escaping it. The rocket doesn’t improve the ground it leaves.
Notice, too, how the project defends itself step by step. No single therapy abolishes death; each one just heals something — this cell damage, that failing organ. Each step is medicine. Only the sum is escape. In the book I called this the sorites problem, after the old puzzle about grains and heaps: no grain makes the heap, and yet the heap arrives. A research program whose declared destination is the end of death has already told you what it is aiming at, whatever the size of its steps. We are entitled — obligated — to judge the destination and not only the steps.
What the engineers assume without arguing
Underneath the engineering sits a metaphysical claim that is never defended, because it is never noticed: that death is a defect. That mortality is a bug in an otherwise acceptable system. That the world, as given, is broken in exactly this one repairable way.
But that is the assumption my book spends thirteen chapters auditing, and the audit keeps returning the same result. Death is not a malfunction in the living world; it is one of the load-bearing walls. Renewal — the forest’s nurse logs, the body’s own daily replacement of itself, the succession of generations that lets anything new ever happen — runs on endings. A world that keeps every individual form forever is not a perfected world. It is a world that has stopped.
The engineers are owed gratitude for their medicine and resistance on their metaphysics. Heal the diseases of aging — all of them, if we can. But the moment the project’s aim shifts from healing the mortal to abolishing the mortal, it stops being the oldest human kindness and becomes the newest utopian architecture — and the argument of Chapter Eight applies to it in full: every blueprint for a perfect world eventually meets the parts of reality that don’t fit, and history keeps a record of what blueprints do then.
The disagreement, stated fairly
De Grey has often framed the moral stakes as a simple calculation: aging causes suffering and death at a scale nothing else approaches; therefore defeating it is the most important work in the world. I respect the seriousness. But the calculation only goes through if a deathless humanity is better off — and that is precisely what cannot be calculated, because the beings in question would no longer be us. The equation smuggles its answer into its terms.
My claim, from the book, one line: what if a world without death would cease to be the very world that makes life meaningful?
That is not a prediction. It is a question the engineers have not answered — because their framework cannot ask it.
Live long. Live well. Fight every disease that shortens and darkens life, and thank the researchers who make it possible. And when the pitch shifts from more life to no death — notice the shift. Everything in this book, and everything in the long record of perfect worlds, says that shift is where the trouble starts.
The treasure was never behind the horizon. Not even that one.
